Cascade Brewing is coming hard in September!

The Sang Noir 2016 project with Bing cherries and more set off the fall!

Whaddup Sour Heads!

While I'm still embracing this sour style pretty much everyone else is lovin’, I can respect it and Cascade Brewing knows how to brew ‘em!
Straight outta Portland, Oregon, Cascade has released its highly anticipated Sang Noir 2016 project in both bottle and on tap (if you’re lucky).

Here’s their breakdown straight from the source:

Sang Noir is a blend of imperial red ales aged in bourbon and wine barrels for up to two years with Bing cherries. The darkest in Cascade's series of “Sang” projects, Sang Noir features flavors of dark roast malts, bourbon, black cherries and port wine. It comes in at 10.1 percent alcohol by volume.
Sang Noir is a Tier Two offering; Cascade’s new bottles have distinct label styles for each of the three Cascade Brewing pricing tiers, with each label within the tier utilizing distinctive colors to clearly differentiate each beer. The tiers differ by the style of beer used in the product, the type ingredients contained within, the time aged in the barrels and types of barrels used.

Plus…
Cascade Brewing also let us know that they have two upcoming releases in September: One Way or Another, plus a collab with Bruery Terreux that drops on September 12th and the Vitis Noble 2016 on the 19th.

Oh, and I love Cascade’s “About Us” joint. Check it:
Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. Its distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales with an emphasis on project year-to-year variation. These beers offer a complex array of flavors derived from the acid, the fruit and the residual flavors present in the barrels in which they age. The resulting beers offer a complex array of flavors and aromas derived from with each project year release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Cascade Brewing’s sour ales are brewed and blended in Portland, Oregon.
For more inforamtion, visit CascadeBrewing.com and join the brewery on social media @CascadeBrewing. Cheers to the sours; enjoy in a profoundly wise manner.

Happy sippin’ everyone! I’m about to hit the road for a bit and I have a lot of big things on deck so stay posted and follow your bro on especially Instagram and this site.

Peace!

ATL hosts Shelton Bros Fest, a Wing Showdown and Solar Eclipse Events!

It's going down in Atlanta tonight through Monday. Be ready!

Whaddup?!

Right off the bat, I want to say that my Ale-B-Q Beer Dinner with Sweet Auburn BBQ, Three Taverns and Creature Comforts was INCREDIBLE! Not only did it sell out, but the food was amazing and I received a lot of props from the pairings with the ales I picked from the two breweries. I want to thank everyone for their support. Look for another one coming soon.

I kick it with Creative Loafing!
On to other news and speaking of pairing beers, I am in the new Creative Loafing that dropped this week talking about what specific Georgia beers to pair with wings (to the right). I hope you dig it here! I am also in another feature where I joined a group of fellow gourmands and ranked ATL's best wings. I, along with Brad Kaplan, Angela Hansberger, Adjoa Danso and CL Food Editor Hilary Cadigan hit up a dozen wing spots throughout the city, ate at least two drums or flats each, and then ranked them. It was a blast and I immediately reminisced after reading this hilarious article here. Our comments were off the chain. Ha!

Shelton Brothers Fest and Parties
And now this weekend. Anyone heard of a little ol’ get-together called the Shelton BrothersFest? Of course, I'm being facetious; spanning today and tomorrow, this event is going to be absolutely bananas! Just look at this lineup here. Whoa! I hope to see you there! Gotta thank LiberatorDistributing for bringing pretty much 90 percent of these breweries to the ATL! And as if we couldn't get enough beer, Creature Comforts is collaborating with a few folks during the weekend at the jams below. Well daaaaaayumn!

2nd Annual Southern Wing Showdown
There is also the 2nd Annual Springer Mountain Southern Wing Showdown presented by Taste of Atlanta this Sunday, August 20th that I'm definitely hitting up. There might be a few tickets left so check out this link.
...

Solar Eclipse
And then there’s that whole solar eclipse thing. ATL is supposed to be “seeing” 97 percent of the sun covered according to one of my homies, but I strongly advise everyone rock those special NASA-approved glasses or serious eye damage can occur. And with this momentous happening in the works, there are a few spots hosting awesome gatherings for us to enjoy. Here are three that struck my interest direct from the source:

See the eclipse from The Roof at Ponce City Market’s Skyline Park
Looking for the best place to watch history happen? Head to The Roof at Ponce City Market to view the Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21Skyline Park will open early at 12:30 p.m. and offer eclipse glasses to the first 300 guests. Park Tavern Hosts Solar Eclipse Viewing Party
Featuring Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Cocktails, Beer and Complimentary Takeaways for the first 100 Guests
On Monday, August 21, 2017, stargazers are invited to witness the first solar eclipse viewable since 1984 by joining the fun at Park Tavern’s Solar Eclipse Viewing Party beginning at 12:30 p.m. Overlooking the Midtown skyline and Piedmont Park, revelers can rock out to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon album while sipping on frosty summer beers and cocktails such as the Shakey Mule and the BlueBerry Farm Mule, Moon Pie Drop Shots and more. As a special giveaway, the first 100 guests to purchase a Blue Moon beer, Moon Pie Drop Shot or Fugu Vodka cocktail will receive a complimentary pair of NASA, ISO-approved solar eclipse glasses and a signature Park Tavern souvenir cup. Ale's Dinner Bell: Sweet Auburn BBQ, Creature Comforts and Three Taverns!

It goes down with Creature Comforts and Three Taverns on August 15th at 6:30 pm!
Whaddup!
Man, July has been a blur! From Montreal to Denver, Birmingham, Charleston and finally back to Atlanta, I love traveling but it's time to settle in for a bit. Especially when I have this awesome Ale B-Q Beer Dinner coming up with one of the most revered BBQ institutions in the South, Sweet Auburn BBQ, based in the Virginia Highlands district.
As with all my beer dinners, I pick the breweries to partner with and pair a few of their select beers with the delectable cuisine the chef and talented cooking staff want to hook up. This upcoming joint on Tuesday, August 15th will have renowned Chef Cameron Floyd hooking up the awesome menu below. The brew? I'm showing Georgia love and going with Decatur's Three Taverns and Creature Comforts straight outta Athens. Heard of 'em? (Being facetious there.) I have to taste two more brews Three Taverns has for me to pair, so look for the beer coupling of every course soon!
Below is the stellar press release written by my homies over at Blue Hominy. Oh! And if you have allergies or diet restrictions, vegetarian, chicken and seafood options will be available; just kindly let us know so we can accommodate you. We want everyone happy, content, educated and most importantly, full. Sound good?
See you there!
It's going to be one to remember.
Much love y'all!

Check out my CraftBeer.com article on Brick Store Pub’s 20 years!

I loved writing about this legendary beer bar based in Atlanta for one of the dopest sites in the beer world.
One of my pics. The front of the world renown Brick Store Pub.

Whaddup!
I just got back from Denver, but while I was there, I was excited to see that the Web’s authority of craft beer justly called CraftBeer.com posted my article featuring the 20 years of one of the world’s most revered beer bars, Decatur, GA’s own Brick Store Pub.
The pic I took of Dave Blanchard, the co-owner of BSP.
I have a little history with CraftBeer.com; I know many of them (especially their brilliant editor Jess), and they did a dope article on me not too long ago that had a brother floored! Well, since I never wrote for them, Jess loved the idea I pitched to them: a feature highlighting the 20th year of Brick Store being in business. She happily said, "go for it!" With that, I put the pressure on myself to kill it and go extra hard. Don’t get me wrong, I give every article I pen full dedication, but personally knowing the Brick Store Pub staff for years and with the BSP being one of my favorite spots to chill, this had to be next-level work in a lot of ways. Trust me, it’s often more difficult to write about something you know a lot about because you want the world to know as much as possible, hence editing becomes the most laborious.
This article was undoubtedly one of the most challenging I have ever written, but also one of the best in my opinion. Plus, I had the liberty of shooting whatever I wanted as well, so I went all in while learning about everyone involved during the process. Shout outs to Dave, Todd, Ryan, Mike, Tom, Erin, Dan and everyone else who helped with this article.
I hope you enjoy this piece, because I meant every word.
Here’s to two decades of being gangster, Brick Store. I am on my way to the pub celebrate it!
And to my readers of this blog, I love y’all! Your support keeps me going and loving what I do.

Bell’s Two-Hearted dethrones Pliny The Elder after eight years!

Zymurgy Magazine Announces 2017 “Best Beers In America” and Bell’s kicks major ass!

Whaddup!
My American Homebrewers Association homies just announced the results from their Zymurgy Magazine 15th annual Best Beers in America survey.
For eight straight years, Russian River Brewing Company’s world-renowned Pliny the Elder double IPA had been running things at the number one spot, but Bell’s Two Hearted Ale IPA breaks the streak and becomes 2017’s most gangster beer in America according to Zymurgy’s thousands of homebrewing posse members. Whoa!

In AHA’s official press release, director Gary Glass says, “As homebrewers, Zymurgy readers have more refined palates than most for tasting beer. The Best Beers in America survey reveals which beers are leaving the biggest impression on the minds—and mouths—of these discerning beer drinkers.”
Survey participants voted online for their 20 favorite commercial beers “available for purchase” in the United States in an online voting system.
Bell’s CEO Laura Bell, the daughter of the brewery’s founder Larry Bell, says in the same release, “This is an incredible honor for us. We got our start as homebrewers—that’s how my dad got going—so we really identify with the homebrewing community. We take a lot of that spirit into what we do today.”

Check out this fun podcast with Vortex, Wild Heaven and more!

Whaddup!
I had the honor of being invited as the special guest for a podcast (click HERE to check it out) hosted by one of the most prominent landmarks in Georgia, The Vortex. Known for their gangster burgers, signature skull facade in the front of its Little Five Points location, being owned by the three Benoit siblings out of L.A., Laughing Skull amber ale brewed by Red Brickand their attitude of basically not giving a sh*t about rules, they also have a really fun radio show based on beer.
Photo by "Baby Vortex" Colin Murphy.
I gladly joined them, brought a gift my homey Walker Anderson brought me from his Oregon tripthe Breakside Lunch Break Session IPA and sipped brews alongside co-hosts Michael Benoit, Sarah Young from Wild Heaven Craft Beer, suds enthusiast Hannah White, and social media manager "Vortex Baby" Colin Murphy. It was a blast as we discussed everything from new beers to drink for the summer including the fantastic WH Goodvice, to crab cakes, Wicked Weed's recent buyout, blunts paired with stouts, seafood and a road trip to Asheville. Enjoy this one!

Cheers to my late brew brother Dan Rosen.

The co-founder of Mazurt Brewing has left us in the physical.

I usually post a lot of positive, fun material, but I also have to recognize those who deserve it. I found out that I lost a great friend and one of the most talented brewers I have ever met, Dan Rosen.

MAZURT Brewing Co-Founders Hamp Covington and Dan Rosen (right)
holding up their medals at the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting.
Dan, 58, and I have known each other for a long time and we always commended each other on the hard work and dedication to empowering the beer scene of especially Atlanta. He, alongside his MAZURT Brewing partner Hamp Covington, have often won awards and received countless accolades on the series of imperial stouts they have been producing for numerous beer events throughout the city including Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, the Strong Beer Fest, and even Hunahpu Day with Cigar City in Tampa Bay, FL.
Dan is second from the left.
Dan always was in good spirits and made sure those around him were as well. He even made me a special leather flat brim baseball hat in recognition of my love for dope hats. When I found out he was a victim of a heartless crime—a hit and run on June 6th—it was too sudden a goodbye to such a great man.
Toast one for Dan. He will be sorely missed.
I trust the Mazurt Brewing passion will live on.
Do me a favor and give a good friend dap and a hug today.

Here are two videos with Orpheus Founder and Brewmaster Jason Pellett!

We are discussing two of their numerous gangster brews being poured at Orpheus’ third anniversary.

Yep, it’s your homey Ale back on the screen and this time I'm kicking it with Orpheus Brewing’s head honcho Jason Pellett discussing two of the many brews being poured during their three-day celebration Memorial Weekend to close year three of brewing brilliance.
This first video (with the screenshot above) features a wild ale with maybe the longest name in beer history—Like a White Curtain Blowing inthe Draft From a Half-Opened Window Beside a Chair on Which Nobody Sits. Crazy, right? Here is the label:

This second joint here has me and Brother J sipping the bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout, 12th Labor. This one is also bananas. (That is good thing.)
Here is the artwork designed by David Hale:
I hope you have a chance to swing by and try these brews, plus a gang of other joints responsible for Orpheus existing, succeeding, and happily keeping Georgia refreshed for the trifecta and beyond.
Shout out to Noelle with Elle PR, Laura and Forage Films for shooting this joint.
Ultimately, keep supporting craft beer!
Cheers!

Ale’s photos from Wild Heaven’s 7th Birthday are here!

Sales Queen Sarah, who has been down for a hella long time, is lit for year number seven!

Happy Birthday Eric, Nick, Sarah and the rest of Wild Heaven!

Whaddup!
It has been a while since my last post, so I felt this would wake things up by showing off some shots of great people, beer authorities, and the Wild Heaven family enjoying year number seven at their Avondale Estates brewery last Sunday, May 21st. These pics should give you an idea of how dope it was. (I will be posting a few more soon.)
Ever since my first feature on Wild Heaven coming to Atlanta here back in 2010, they have proven to be talented, enterprising and overall down-to-earth folks. I guess you could say they are a heaven-send of sorts for ATL’s craft beer scene for sure!
Anyway, we evidently go waaaaaaay back and I wish them nothing but continued success. (Especially after drinking that Goodvice DIPA I feel was made just for me!)
Enjoy!

Word? Wicked Weed and A-B?

Cheers Everyone.

Every morning brings another opportunity for mind-blowing news to hit the beer scene. Well the news of Wicked Weed signing with Anheuser-Busch’s unit specializing in craft and imports called The High End almost made me spit out my coffee.
There seems to be a civil war of sorts going on in the brewing industry regarding craft breweries (see the official definition here from the Brewers Association) and what some call the Bigs, the Majors, the Macros, or even is some social circles, the Evil Empires. This is something that I have been keeping an eye on for a while now. There are so many subplots to how this affects consumers, bar owners, marketing, retail, employees, media…hell, even hop growers.
I am honestly torn.
There is no doubt that I will always have a place in my heart for the underdog, the minority, the scrappy dude who uses any means necessary to thrive independently. It’s in my blood and have to be in that state of mind my whole life just because of constantly being in that situation one way or another. In the beer world, there are certainly some similarities. There were many times where I simply saw what was going down and was like, word? Did that just happen?
Like remember when that A-B commercial campaign was constantly run where they shitted on microbreweries and craft beer snobs a couple of Super Bowls ago? Hell yes. Cussed like a drunk sailor the first time it came on.
And of course, there is the worry that those breweries who do merge with one of the majors will lose the soul they put into the wondrous craft brews that garnered respect in the first the place. Will they be watered down? Will they suck? Will there no longer be any one-offs or barrel-aged gangster releases anymore? Will there be any more risqué marketing gimmicks and eye-popping art on the labels? Will they still host events for the community and support the arts?
Wicked Weed bringing brews
to a tap takeover at The Porter.
Plus, there’s that consistent cloud over every purist’s head wondering who will be next.
Well, being a Libra and always about balance, I have sat down with those who were involved with a brewery partnering with a macro; homies who kept it real and are true friends of mine. They usually began conversations with a somewhat defeated “I know, I know.”
Yes, they know that some of their favorite beer bars who solely support independents will not pour their beer anymore. They know handshakes from some loyalists will not be as firm. And yes, they also know a lot of their usually casual, shoot-the-breeze chats will involve fielding questions about the merger.
I also know that, according to what they have told me, they will (in many cases) have more benefits, resources, and access to markets and regions they previously couldn’t dream of entering. And I know they will still have a gang of beers from independents in their refrigerators at home. And I know some of the owners are realizing their dreams of having their brews poured in hotels, stadiums, pubs, and restaurants throughout the nation and in some cases, overseas.
Of course, I also know there are others who get pissed at being overruled to join majority, bounce, and start from scratch once again. Which some eventually find refreshing.
It is what it is.
I just pray the playground is as even as possible when it comes to the access of hops, grains, and other ingredients for cats like Three Floyds, Creature Comforts, Beachwood, Wrecking Bar, Three Taverns, Alchemist, Bissell Brothers, and Scofflaw to name a few. That enough shelf space, menu print, and taps will still be allotted to beer worthy of prominent placement. Basically, that everybody will play nice. But only time will tell.
Regarding Wicked Weed’s latest business move, I can’t wait to talk with some of their reps and staff about this. They are my peoples. They have showed me love wherever I went. I have Instagrams with me rocking their schwag. I have visited them numerous times at the main brewery, the Funkatorium, and Pub in Asheville. And I will continue to do so. They are good people and shit, they make good ass beer.
And hell, if I have the chance to sip their Pernicious IPA in Jamaica or somewhere accustomed to having a bullshit selection of brews, I definitely won’t be mad at that. But I promise you this: I will be objectively holding it up to the light, smelling it, and sipping it with some scrutiny to see if shit done changed.
Below is the official press release straight from Anheuser-Busch.
Happy sippin'.
Ale

This image is straight from Anheuser-Busch's site.

New York and Asheville, NC, May 3, 2017–
Wicked Weed Brewing, one of Asheville’s most creative and fastest-growing craft breweries will be joining The High End, Anheuser-Busch’s business unit focused on its craft and import brands.
Wicked Weed, founded in Asheville in 2012 by Walt and Luke Dickinson and lifelong friends Ryan, Rick and Denise Guthy, has created over 500 different beers since it opened almost five years ago. Starting with clean West Coast IPAs and authentic Belgian ales, Wicked Weed has progressively moved into creating sours.  Now, Wicked Weed is widely known for their west coast style IPA’s including GABF silver medal winners Pernicious IPA, Lunatic Belgian Blonde as well as a wide range of award winning barrel-aged sour and farmhouse ales.
“This is an exciting time for the entire brewing team,” said co-founder Walt Dickinson. “Our ability to create a wide range of really well executed beers that are focused on creativity, quality and drinkability is what makes Wicked Weed great. We have chosen to partner with The High End to position ourselves to make Wicked Weed what we imagined it could be when we first sat at a craft beer bar and talked about opening a brewery. As a brewer, giving our team more resources to continue innovating our portfolio and the ability to reach more craft drinkers, allows us to keep putting the beer and the people first.”
Wicked Weed Brewing owns and operates four facilities in Asheville: their original Downtown brewpub where they produce over 150 different beers a year, the “Funkatorium,” the first dedicated sour beer taproom and barrel house on the East Coast, a 50-barrel production brewery in West Asheville, and the “Funk House and company headquarters,” a custom-designed brewhouse and training facility.
“Asheville has been our home for almost thirty years, and we believe this partnership will benefit our entire community, which has a deeply rooted passion for beer,” added co-founder Rick Guthy. “With our team’s heightened ability to innovate our hoppy and sour styles using the highest-quality ingredients around, we hope more and more beer drinkers will flock to Asheville to taste what we have to offer. Our pub and Funkatorium will stay focused on producing creative beers and will be part of Asheville’s beer tourism for years to come.”
“We are excited to welcome Walt, Luke, Ryan, Rick, Denise, and the entire Wicked Weed team into our High End family, said Felipe Szpigel, president, The High End. “It’s clear to me Wicked Weed is redefining what sophistication in beer can mean, with their amazing offerings being relevant in a wide variety of occasions. Their ability to brew the highest quality beers, in a variety of styles, along with their exciting barrel program, leads me to be optimistic about what our futures hold together."
Anheuser-Busch's partnership with Wicked Weed is subject to regulatory approval. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Wicked Weed Brewing was awarded a gold medal for both 100% Brettanomyces Serenity in 2013, Mompara Honey Ale in 2014, a silver medal for Pernicious IPA in 2015, and a silver medal for Lunatic Belgian Blonde at the Great American Beer Festival. The brewery also received a bronze medal for Tyrant Double Red IPA in 2014, a bronze medal for La Bonté Pear in 2016 and a bronze medal for Red Angel in 2016 at the World Beer Cup.
