San Diego Craft Breweries Green Flash and Alpine Unite!

Left to right, it's Chuck Silva (Green Flash Brewmaster), Pat McIlhenney (President, Brewmaster - Alpine Beer Company), and Mike Hinkley (Green Flash Co-Founder and CEO) toasting off their venture.
Green Flash and Alpine Beer Company join forces for the good of the craft brew world. Yes!

Hey y’all!
As many of you know, I am a big fan of San Diego, California-based breweries and when I heard that two great ones in the region—Green Flash and Alpine Beer Company—formed an alliance, I had to show love. Usually when we dedicated craft beer lovers hear about breweries being "acquired," there is a deep breath and the assumption that, shall we say, a macro brewery bought them out. This is a bit refreshing, yes?
Please see the official press release below. They all look like happy campers to me. Brewers unite!
Cheers!

San Diego-Based Craft Breweries Celebrate Strength in Unity
Green Flash Brewing Co. acquires Alpine Beer Co.
Sharing Resources and Wisdom, A San Diego Craft Beer Alliance Is Formed

At Alpine Beer Company this morning, Green Flash founders, Mike and Lisa Hinkley and Alpine Beer Company founders, Pat and Val McIlhenney announced that their breweries will join forces, teaming up to share resources, knowledge and experience.  Both the McIlhenneys and the Hinkleys view the affiliation as mutually beneficial, and are committed to supporting each other for the success of both breweries.  Each company will remain independently operated and maintain its distinct brand and culture.  Pat will remain Alpine’s President and Brewmaster to oversee all operations of Alpine Beer Company while also ensuring Alpine beers continue to meet his unwavering standard of quality, whether brewed at the Alpine or Green Flash facilities.  The most notable change will transpire over the next several years, as Alpine beer will become available to their legions of fans from across the country who have only experienced the greatness of Alpine beers while visiting California.
In a “handshake agreement,” Green Flash began brewing Alpine beer in November 2013 at their San Diego facility with the goal of helping longtime friends at Alpine raise capital to expand their production capacity.  Green Flash has been producing three of Alpine’s brews (Nelson, Hoppy Birthday and Duet), increasing Alpine annual production from 1500 to 3000 BBLs.

The experience of brewing together has been a successful learning experience for both breweries.  Green Flash Brewmaster, Chuck Silva divulged, “It was both intriguing and challenging to meld our philosophies while we worked together to scale up Pat’s recipes to be brewed in larger quantities.  We worked together to stay true to the original beer and were very happy with the ultimate results. Working with a close friend is a real treat, but for me, brewing with Pat and making Alpine beers, is yet another highlight of my brewing career in San Diego.”
The successful arrangement they have shared over the past year was the impetus that prompted the breweries to take their relationship to the next level. Each views the partnership as an organic evolution that will benefit both of their operations in many ways. “Our team was thrilled to be able to brew the awesome beer from Alpine when we began teaming up,” says Mike Hinkley of Green Flash.  “The excitement of our brewers is what prompted me to think about additional ways we could work together and help each other.  We perceive this solid new partnership as an incredible opportunity to continue to explore our craft while benefiting from the passion and experience of Pat McIlhenney.”
“After working with Green Flash for the past year, I have come to truly trust and deeply respect the entire Green Flash operation – Chuck and all of their brewers are meticulous, yet easygoing, and I am comfortable working with the team,” says Pat McIlhenney of Alpine Beer Co. “There are many benefits in teaming up with Green Flash as a partner. Not only are they committed to producing high-quality beer, the company culture and mom and pop roots of Green Flash are very similar to our own.”
Alpine employees 20 people, is distributed exclusively in California with the ability to produce a maximum of 1500 BBLs from their San Diego County brew-house, with most of their beer sold directly from their on-site pub.  Brewing capacity limitations have made it impossible for Pat and his team to support the overwhelming demand for their exceptional products.  As partners, Alpine will be able to tap into the growing Green Flash team of talented brewers, their production capacity, access to capital, and human resources in operations and administration.  Mike added that “I am hopeful that the culmination of the next few years will be that, together, we build a new production facility in Alpine.  Maybe we will even brew some Green Flash ale in Alpine.”
“I know there is strength in unity, which will allow both of our breweries to secure even higher quality ingredients – we will be a great force as a team,” exclaims Pat. “However, the most important advantage is how this partnership will help improve the quality of life for my employees. For the first time, Alpine will be able to offer our team an excellent company benefits package including affordable health care, 401K plans and other perks made possible by this exciting partnership.”
In 2015, Green Flash will begin bottling select Alpine brews in 22oz bottles adding to the three current draft offerings.  Collaborative brews are already in Chuck and Pat’s top-secret conversations, so consumers can expect these to appear in their tasting rooms and at the best craft beer bars in Southern California.  The two Brewmasters are already talking about how they can work together at Green Flash’s Cellar 3, a special barrel-aged beer packaging facility that is currently under construction in Poway, and will include a cork-finish bottling line.
Chuck said, “I consulted Pat and borrowed some of his ideas when I made our tenth anniversary Flanders-style ale, which was a great success and will be recreated at Cellar 3.  I am always on the look-out for ideas. With Pat and me on the same team, you can count on us to push the envelope even further.”
Mike summarizes, “This partnership is win-win-win.  Green Flash wins because we are teaming up with a truly iconic brewery.  Alpine wins because they get to see their beers enjoyed by so many more of their adoring fans.  But most of all, beer geeks everywhere win, because Chuck and Pat will be working together to create beers that will blow their minds.”

Starr Hill is set to launch their Shakedown Imperial Chocolate Cherry Stout!

This Charlottesville, Virginia-based brewery flexes in ATL during November!

Whaddup!

So Starr Hill Brewery, who entered the Atlanta beer market not too long ago, has certainly made their presence known. Representing Charlottesville, Virginia, I am always looking to see what they have next on deck. Well, after talking with their reps (Cheers to Kayla and Matt!), they are going hard in the paint throughout November.
For starters, I am looking forward to Starr’s sixth and final installment of their 2014 limited releases, the Shakedown Imperial Chocolate Cherry Stout (pictured above), which is scheduled to pour at their brewery’s revamped Tap Room on Halloween night and during International Stout Day, which is Thursday, November 6th, 2014. They described it here:
“Shakedown is a full-bodied imperial stout with cherries and dark chocolate blended into the beer during fermentation. Aromas of bittersweet chocolate and fruit delight the senses. Tartness from the cherries balances the smooth cocoa sweetness. Malty, chocolate and dark fruit flavors create a rich and complex beer that is meant to be savored slowly.”
Sounds good, doesn’t it? It will be 8 percent ABV and 45 IBUs. Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie!
In ATL, it will only be on draft starting next week (dammit) especially during its launch party at King + Duke on the 6th. (See below.) Here is a list of events they have popping off throughout the month here:

  • On November 5th, there is a Starr Hill Beer Dinner at the always hip No. 246. It will be 5 courses, 5 brews, at $55 per person. Dinner starts at 6:30 pm and reservations are made through Hop City! (Try 404.350.9998 or email minaholliday@hopcitybeer.com.)

  • On November 6th, Starr Hill will host the Launch Party aka Shakedown Street at Buckhead’s posh King + Duke. (It will be appetizers and beer, not a formal sit down event.) Call and RSVP with receptionist at (404) 477-3500.

  • On November 21st, it’s The Chapter Room formerly known as The Fred Bar’s 5th Anniversary Party (The rumor has it there will be a Starr Hill/Terrapin Cask-Conditioned Woodford Reserve Barrel-Aged GAVA!)
Stay tuned for more beer news soon.

Beer Dinner Alert! Meehan’s celebrates the Walking Dead this Thursday!

You gotta love the originality of this one!

Whaddup!

With my extra fond love for beer dinners, I want to make sure y’all see why. Here is one that gets a ten for originality on Thursday, October 30, at Meehan’s in Sandy Springs (227 Sandy Springs Place, #416, Atlanta, GA 30328) celebrating the hit show created right here in Georgia, Walking Dead. There is even a “pregame” from 5 – 7:00 p.m.! And don’t worry, serving human flesh is illegal so Meehan’s thankfully didn’t stay too true to the zombie theme. Instead, below is the kickass menu and ale pairings courtesy of Athens, Georgia’s Terrapin Beer Company.

Update! New Holland, Prairie Ales and GA Craft Beer Fest are coming!

It's on in Georgia!

Whaddup!

Although I will be heading to Pittsburgh and Cleveland to do some more Cruisin’ For A Brewsin’ (stay tuned for that coverage), I wanted to continue making sure all of my homies know about what else is cracking for Atlanta Beer Week.
Besides the stellar tap takeovers at top-of-the-class bars including The Porter, Brick Store, and Argosy, there is the Georgia Craft Beer Fest on Saturday, October 25th from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Candler Park, featuring arts, live entertainment, grub from the city’s top food trucks, and more than 100 craft beers to sample from all over the great state of Georgia! Argosy goes gangster for Atlanta Beer Week!

Atlanta Beer Week starts on October 18th through the 25th and East Atlanta's Argosy is set to show off!

Whaddup!

I just celebrated my birthday at the Argosy due to a lot of homies working there (thanks for the love Armando, Donald and staff), a lot of fellow brew nuts living close by, and hell, it's one of my top 5 spots to get the best beer available in ATL.
Well, to show how dedicated the Argosy is, here is what they have brewing for Atlanta Beer Week starting on October 18th through the 25th. Bell's, the Georgia debut of Krebs, Oklahoma's Prairie, Evil Twin, Westbrook, New Holland and the Beer Camp roster will be featured and I am loving it!
Ultimately, the whole week will be nuts. I mean come on, I stick by my claim of Atlanta being one of the sickest beer cities in the nation (a good sick I mean). This special week will help solidify my word is legit.
Below is what the official website is saying to keep us in suspense. They also have a Facebook page and Twitter. Of course, I've got your back too when it comes to updates so be ready!

Cheers!

Terrapin's 5th Annual Hop Harvest Fest is poppin' off today!

What's up Hop Heads!

If you are in Athens, Georgia, you don't want to miss the 5th annual Hop Harvest Fest from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.! Sent from one of the awesome reps of this beloved Georgia brewery, numerous highlights will include...
  • Eight hopped-up firkins! Sample a great selection of different hop varieties.
  • Barrel-aged and rare beer! Some of these beers are only available at the brewery for special events.
  • Ceremonious cutting of the hops.
  • Live music, local vendors, and a wide selection of Terrapin favorites.
  • An Artisan Market with locally crafted trinkets and treasures.
  • And the official release of this year's wet-hopped So Fresh and So Green!
Go here for all of the details.

I have too much family in town for my birthday to make the jump over there, so it is going to be a hard one to miss, but I want to make sure y'all knew about it. Save a sip for me!

Cheers!

Wine vs. Beer: It’s Infographic Time!

Check out these fun facts comparing brew with vino! Guess what I’m rootin’ for?!

Whaddup!!!

Every once in a while, I make it a point to post an infographic on this site because they are fun, entertaining, informative, and easy to get due to great illustrations and extensive research by numerous credible sources. This one below compares what I consider to be the greatest beverage in the world, beer, with the liquid grapes. Learn things like…
  • Which competitor is healthier?
  • Which one is better to cook with?
  • What was here first, a brewery or a winery?
  • What beverage is the U.S. drinking more of, wine or beer?
  • What is the most expensive bottle of beer and wine ever sold?
  • Which country is drinking the most beer and wine worldwide?

Special thanks to CompareCamp.com for the dope graphic below. Clock on it, enjoy it, and get schooled!
