A ridiculous weekend including Secret Stash Bash!

Chillin' with 5 Seasons Mastermind Kevin McNerney and Green Flash!
Draft Filling Station, Secret Stash Bash, multiple beer bars, and New Belgium Beer dinner coming up = 'Cray'!

Ohhhhh man, what a weekend! I needed all day Sunday to shut my body down and recover! On Friday, I hit up a new growler spot called Draft Filling Station that boasts about 41 taps, schwag, an amazing staff, and get this: tastings! (Look for a feature on them soon and the Ale Sharpton Monthly Draft Pick featured there! First up: Wild Heaven's Ode To Mercy Winter edition.)
Draft Filling Station showing off my 32 ounces of freshly poured
Green Flash Le Freak Ale Sharpton-style! Owwwww!
After that, I did some beer consulting for a new restaurant (the official announcement's coming soon), and then it was spades all night along with a bottle share at my spot (Goose Island's Bourbon County Stout, Sierra Nevada's new Ovila with Plums, and SweetWater's new Red Wheat Wine were on the menu).

And then there was Saturday.

Sarah with Wild Heaven, New Holland's Tyler (left), local artist Matt Albert,
and hundreds of others were in the house!
The Secret Stash Bash on Saturday afternoon hosted by 5 Seasons-Sandy Springs and Taco Mac's Prado location, was was bananas! Breweries from all over the nation flexed their muscles and flaunted some of their limited edition beers you can't buy at any bottle shop. Pouring from casks, kegs and bottles, hundreds of us got our sip on in perfect weather! There are couple of photos here and a lot more coming up in a follow-up post!

J-Smooth with Boulevard kicked it with me at the Fred
and a gang of other ridiculous spots on Saturday!
After that, I took my new homey, Kansas City's Boulevard Brewer Jeremy Danner, for a night on the town visiting some of Atlanta's prized beer slingers in this order: The FredWrecking Bar, the Porter, Brick Store, Leon's, and the new hot spot in East Atlanta, Argosy. I proceeded on to the Octopus Bar to meet up with some friends from the AllWays Open Creative crew, the super cool Fox Brothers, and a few others. (Jeremy smartly took it home after Argosy so that he could wake up for his morning flight. That had to be murder but I hope it was totally worth it!) I left my camera with my trusty brother Lamont who shot most of these flicks (thank  Mont!) after the Stash Bash because I was scared it would come up missing by the end of the night, but pics still surfaced on my Twitter. Overall, that night was crazy!

Me and Chip with New Belgium showing off their gangster schwag!
Oh, and a shout out to New Belgium! So many people tried to but my Rampant Imperial IPA hat off of me but it wasn't happenin'! I love trucker caps and this one is fire! And speaking of which, they have a beer dinner with ATL's new seafood god, The Optimist, tomorrow (Tuesday, 3/11) and there might be a few seats left! Here is the info (shout outs to my boy Chip and Craig with New Belgium; Optimist's Owner and Chef Ford Fry; and Kraig & Co. with Hop City!):

The Optimist/New Belgium Beer Dinner
Tuesday, March 12th - 6:00 pm!

Join Hop City at The Optimist (914 Howell Mill Rd), one of Atlanta's hottest restaurants as we eat delicious food paired with New Belgium beers. We will be tasting Shift, Ranger, Dig, Transatlantic Kriek, and two brand-new beers (including the Rampant)! It'll be $50 plus tax and tip. Call 404-350-9998 or email Mina at Hop City here for reservations: minaholliday@hopcitybeer.com for reservations.

Look for tons of more things to report including my coverage of the upcoming Atlanta Auto Show. As usual, Atlanta and the entire microbrew industry's off the chain!

Cheers!

Here are six awesome beer events you can’t miss!

This was the Secret Stash Bash trophy in 2014. Who will win it this year?! I took this when TMAC's Head Honcho
Adam  Anacker proudly held this up last year.
From Brick Store’s Changing of the Guard to Secret Stash Bash (plus my beer dinner), make plans now!

Whaddup!!!

With so much poppin’ off in ATL to end the month of February and then make the big step into March, I had to post a few of the events starting with tomorrow’s Changing of The Guard at the Brick Store, one of the world’s most revered beer bars. To add on a personal note, I just completed the first session of my sold out (Thank You!) Girl Scout Cookie Beer Pairing with Hop City and Scout Mob at Krog Street Market; the final two sessions are next Monday. As a follow up, I have a beer dinner themed around merging winter and spring justly titled Season Hopping with the award-winning restaurant Food 101 in Sandy Springs on March 5th at 7:00. I am about to post the full menu and details in a separate post, but for now, here is what’s in store for the next two weeks that I figured to be super dope.
Thanks so much for your support via physical mailings, Tweets, Instagrams, and any other shout outs you have given me. Seriously, I appreciate you.
Okay, here we go…

The Secret Stash Bash is coming!

Photo by my homey Rachel with Monday Night Brewing on site. Shhhh...
Now it’s two sessions, double the tickets, and, of course, crazy beers!
Happy 2014!

After recuperating from the incredible New Year’s event hosted by my creative agency AllWays Open and DJ Mafioso at Loews Atlanta Hotel (see video on my @realalesharpton on Instagram), it’s the New Year and I am staying on top of what’s popping off in the Atlanta beer scene.
Staying on the case to make sure you get a heads-up on the most happening, festive, original and necessary events for particularly distinguished craft beer lovers like ourselves, the Secret Stash Bash set for Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 5 Seasons-Sandy Springs and Taco Mac-Prado is featured in my first post of the year.
The Stash Bash is in a nutshell more than 40 gangster breweries from throughout the nation rolling up their sleeves and pouring their brew concoctions we may never get to sip again. From one-and-done casks, to barrel-aged brews and extremely limited edition bottles from their collection even the most dedicated package stores don’t carry, this joint is establishing itself as one of the best beer events in the ATL.
Could this be Monday's top secret? Hmmm...
Last year, there were only 450 tickets were sold, and those attendees received armbands allowing freedom to go to both Taco Mac and 5 Seasons to sample from 40 tasting stations that were pouring liquid bliss by Terrapin, Sierra Nevada, Wild Heaven, Boulevard, SweetWater, Green Flash and 36 others (see my coverage here). Well this year, to meet the demand and spread the love, there will be two back-to-back sessions so that 900 palates can get to taste the nation’s finest—450 tickets for each one—at 12:30 to 3:00 and 4:00 to 6:30. And, of course, when I heard the news about two shifts, I asked a head Taco Mac shot caller, Adam, if that meant beer would run out for the second wave. Emphatically, he told me that these beers will be portioned out (15 gallons for many of 'em), and each session would have special surprises. In other words, everyone is going to be happy.
My man at Taco Mac, Adam,
doing my favorite gangster beer pose!
Explaining the photos, since burgeoning local brewer Monday Night Brewing is joining the fun this year, I had to get the scoop on what they were hooking up for the Bash. Grinning ear to ear while sampling their exceptional Bourbon Barrel Drafty Kilt from their Black Tie Series and refreshing Tie Two On Munich Helles Lager, I was digging what they had in mind to pour on March 1 and I would tell ya, but then it wouldn't be a secret then, right?
Ultimately, do yourself a favor and grab a ticket before they’re gone. Trust me, they go fast! Here is the info.
Stay tuned in 2014 for more brew news, a lot more Cruisin’ For A Brewsin’ video episodes, articles written by yours truly, and events especially thrown by AllWays Open Creative.

Cheers!

March Madness, Ale Style!

Kickin' it at the Secret Stash Bash on March 7th with the homies! From left to right, Gary aka G-Unit (IG, @craftybrewer3000), Willie The Kid (@TheWillieTheKid), Lee aka L-Boogie (@TheThirstyGiant), Kenny Anderson (@Chibbs_1) and Tyler aka T-Diddy (@GreenFlashTyler) all got their sip on!
This month continues to be nuts regarding beer!

Cheers Y’all!

I think March Madness will have a totally new meaning in my life after all the events and happenings I have taken on so far along with what’s on deck.
My Girl Scout Joint!
From hosting my Girl Scout Cookie Beer Pairing with Hop City and Scout Mob, to making two satellite radio appearances on ABL’s Day 1 Radio at 52:30 (hear it here) and BeerPopShow Podcast; my awesome beer dinner with Food 101; schooling basketball legend Kenny Anderson on beer during the Secret Stash Bash; four article deadlines; contributing to EBONY Magazine writing about ales; and hosting the Blood, Sweat and Beer documentary during the Atlanta Film Festival last Sunday (which was EXCELLENT), I trust you see what I mean! Oh, and I still did my March Madness brackets although they suck this year.
Speaking of the Blood, Sweat and Beer film, I had a blast showing some southern hospitality to the directors, editors, funders, and filmmakers—Alexis and Chip—leading up to their Georgia debut last Sunday at the historic Plaza Theatre in the Highlands.
Alexis and Chip killed it!
After introducing the viewing, I had the pleasure of seeing this film with about 200 others and can honestly say that I was BLOWN AWAY! It was not only a humorous, informative, and entertaining approach to what it takes to start a brewery, but it honestly pulled at the heart strings while making us thirsty at the same time! I started the Q&A afterwards by simply asking the audience, “Who would have thought beer could bring you through so many emotions?” This one hits home.
I strongly suggest you see this film by going to the official Blood, Sweat, and Beer website here to find out how to get it or get a viewing schedule. Even if you don’t like beer (which is almost blasphemous to even suggest), everyone will enjoy this production, I promise!
Stay tuned for my listing of events coming up in the very near future. I need to take a breather! (Yeah, right. Like that’s gonna happen.)

Much Sippin’ Love!

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp #80 is here!

The #80 Beer Camper Posse!

Wow, the stork has just delivered the beer I brewed with my awesome fellow Beer Campers at Sierra Nevada from June 20-22, 2012,to Atlanta! I’m talking about the Sierra Nevada El Pluorado Beer Camp #80 that will be poured for the first time in the Southeast at Hotoberfest, on Saturday, October 6th. I could talk about the entire experience hour by hour (trust me, I remember every minute!) but I am going to be short and sweet with this one: The experience was unforgettable and I learned a lot to sit down with a dozen bar managers, homebrewers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts from all over the country and negotiate what kind of beer we wanted to make. Trading ideas at a long conference table for a couple of hours discussing everything from the malt to the hops, ABV, mouthfeel, and color, we collectively came up with the El Pluorado—an El Dorado single-hopped golden ale fused with their native pluots-a plum and apricot hybrid—at 5.4 percent ABV and 39 IBUs. I have yet to try it, so I will make sure that is the first sip of the 250-plus beers I could choose from at Hotoberfest.
Sierra Nevada Co-Founder Ken Grossman chillin'.
I wish any beer lover the opportunity to experience a future Beer Camp at this incredible brewery run by, well, incredible people.
I thank Sierra Nevada (especially Chad, Ken, Terence, Brian, Scott, Lance…aw hell, everyone!), all of the #80 Campers, the people of Chico, California, and every ingredient we used. I think these photos will narrate a good part of my trip. Trust me, I have a ton more, but, hey, you get the picture.

Simply put, Sierra Nevada is gangster.

Now for the flicks. Awww snap!
This is truly one of my favorite photos. My man J.D. just left a murder scene and...
wait, that was another time. This is when he was slicing up the blood red interiors of the pluot before adding them to the batch.
Our beer tasting expertise was tested in the lab. A worker slid open that door and ushered in three brews. We had the pick the one that slightly off in some way or another. I wanted one of those cool frosted glasses! This was awesome.
I passed every one of the tests with flying colors for bragging rights.
Why wasn't this one of my exams at Cornell???
The future brewery manager of Sierra Nevada's Mills River, North Carolina site, Brian Grossman, and I celebrate the discovery of Sierra Nevada's secret stash of their extremely limited collaboration with Boulevard Brewery called Terra Incognita. It was crafted for Washington D.C.'s 2012 Savor and it was lip smackin'! Thanks B-Diddy!
Come on, you know I always represent when I travel out of state. I whipped out the Terrapin Phlux Capacitor Side Project for the whole crew to sip on after doing some lab testing. They appreciated the Georgia-born surprise.
The name game. After brewing all day, we were working out the details of what to name our baby while we got our sip on in the lab. We used this spelling as a base and then it was a wrap!
Go green! After brewing, we all got on Sierra Nevada's famous 10-seat Bar Cycle, sipped some brews, and pedaled away to tour the plant. That was nuts! And yes, these are bottles of the Pale Ale. Beautiful ain't it?
Cold case. It was like Willy Wonka in that joint. Cans were also running.
Speaking of running, I gotta bounce and do another episode of my Cruisin' For A Brewsin' show. This time, it's Hotoberfest and it's going to be bananas. This is especially true since the El Pluorado is getting poured for the first time. I hope it's bangin'! Stay tuned...

Cheers!

Screamin’ Sicilian Pizza challenge me to do beer pairings!

Screamin' Sicilian enters Ale's house with pizzas!
What’s up fellow craft beer lovers?!

What's up fellow craft beer sippers?!

It’s no mystery that I love doing a lot of creative things with craft brews from all over the world, from doing tastings with celebs and shot callers, to hosting and curating beer dinners to name a few. Well lucky for me, a well-respected pizza company with a killer marketing campaign called Screamin’Sicilian got word of my fondness to pair ales and lagers with virtually anything fare-wise, so they offered me an intriguing challenge: Pair brews with a few of their circular creations.
Now I do love pizza, but I try to chill on the dairy and meat as much as possible. However, when I read how this Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based company takes pride in using high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients including their signature stone-fired crust serving as the base, plus they truly respect the beer industry (check out their website), I was in.
One of the coolest things about this pizza maker is when you go to their site, they have a “Pizza Finder” where you simply type in your zip code and boom! The freezer section at a Publix two blocks away had their prominent and extra fly packaging—a thick-mustached, gaping mouth serving as a window to what the toppings of each of their pies looked like. Again, Sicilian’s witty descriptions and slick packaging kill it, so they already scored points on that alone; I majored in marketing so there ya go.
Anyway, using some coupons the company provided, I grabbed some pies, invited a few gourmands to my pad, scooped a few brews from Hop City along with a few bottles from my extensive stash that I thought would pair well with them, and we threw down! (Note: I primarily chose beers that are pretty much available nationwide to help ya out no matter where you are.)
Below, I have the three pizzas we baked, and the brews that won top honors to pair with each one. Check it out:

Screamin’ Sicilian’s Bessie’s Revenge

Their description: We begin crafting Bessie’s Revenge, a monument to cheesiness, by starting at the bottom – a.k.a. our unique, stone-fired artisan crust. Each crust is perfect in its imperfection serving as the ideal host to copious amounts of our zesty secret-recipe sauce. And let’s talk sauce. Ours is made lovingly with vine ripened tomatoes that have been kissed by the sun. We then drown those tomatoes in ridiculous amounts of shredded Wisconsin mozzarella and white cheddar and add slices of freshly cut Wisconsin buffalo-style mozzarella cheese gathered from the finest purveyors in America’s Dairyland. These people know cheese!
Then just when you think we’ve gone too far, we finish it off with a gentle kiss of grated aged Parmesan and Romano cheeses from — you guessed it — WISCONSIN.
My Beer: I started with this all-cheese joint, and their description was truly on point. To cut through all that richness, balance the salty element with some sweet, and get everyone’s buzz on early, the Victory Golden Monkey Belgian-Style Tripel at 9.5 percent ABV hit the spot! It’s effervescent texture scrubbed the tongue, and the Monkey’s fruity, yet spicy profile perfectly paired with this pie that was pretty damn delicious. Victory’s more hoppy Prima Pils at 5.3 percent came in second.

Screamin’ Sicilian’s Mambo Italiano

Their description: This is the pizza to take with you when you’re going to the mattresses. We call it the Mambo Italiano. Our thick and chunky secret-recipe, small-batch tomato sauce rides shotgun on a stone-fired artisan crust. And, that crust is made from individually rolled tender balls of dough to create a foundation that could bring Mama to tears. Then we “badda bing, badda boom” this pie with ridiculous amounts of whole milk mozzarella smuggled in, excuse me I mean purchased, from Wisconsin. We know people in the cheese business if you know what I mean. Before you even know what hit you, we pull out the big guns – rough-chopped, thick-cut pepperoni and huge, mouthwatering Italian meatballs that throw a bag over your taste buds and go to town on them.

My beers: With so much going on this pizza, I approached this two ways—provide a beer that solely refreshes and doesn’t complicate things—or go to the extreme and pour something to make it a truly explosive, complex tasting experience. With that, I chose the Atlanta-based SweetWater 420 West Extra Pale Ale (5.7 percent) and the Ballast Point Sculpin Habanero India PaleAle (7 percent).
As I suspected, half of the crew went with the 420 because of its easy drinkability, subtle hoppiness, and crisp finish didn’t overwhelm the pizza’s meat, cheese, and overall abundance of flavors. The other half said “Hell yeah!” to the Habanero because they loved the heat, it stood up to all the meat (especially the rough-cut pepperoni), and basically added peppers to the pizza. Fans of anything spicy would concur with this one!

Last but not least, I chose an even more complex pizza and transitioned the prior liquid pepper theme to the Supremus Maximus, which actually had peppers as some of the toppings, along with black olives, fire-roasted onions, pepperoni and sausage. Boom!

Screamin’ Sicilian’s Supremus Maximus
This is my shot, I had to show this one love!
Their description: Our Supremus Maximus Supreme pizza rules over all other pizzas like the great Caesars, surveying its kingdom from high atop Mount Pizza. Supremus Maximus’s domain is built upon a foundation of individually rolled dough balls made of wheat, water, olive oil & yeast to create our stone-fired crust, each perfectly imperfect in its artisanal shape. Next, Maximus commands that it be dressed in profound quantities of the finest whole milk mozzarella cheese from Wisconsin, the heart of America’s Dairyland.
Maximus continues with heaping piles of buffalo-chopped, thick-cut pepperoni and enormous orbs of Italian sausage steeped with seasonings and spices that overwhelm the senses with joy & euphoria. Like a crown upon its mighty brow, the Supremus Maximus adorns colorful and effervescent strips of fire-roasted onions and red & yellow bell peppers, and black olives complete its glory.
Beware, one bite and Supremus Maximus’ conquest of your mouth will be complete and its rule will last for one thousand years.

My beer: I wanted to cool things down a bit with this last one after hitting my team off with the Ballast Point Habanero joint, so I went the fruity route, brew-wise. With all of those vegetables on top, I thought about what would pair well with a salad, complement some of the sweetness of the sauce, yet give the meats their own stage. With that, the 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer (4.7 percent) brewed with fresh watermelon surprised everyone; they said they got like a gazpacho effect with meat added and truly appreciated this adventurous pick.
While the Hell Or High scored major points for originality, my Ommegang Rare Vos Belgian-Style Amber Ale (6.5 percent) selection hit a unanimous home run because it was just as complex—spicy, slightly sweet, yet light enough to cut through all of the pizza’s ingredients. (And one person was allergic to watermelon.)

I closed the tasting session with dessert—Three Taverns’ Theopan The Recluse Imperial Stout (9 percent)—and then I kicked everyone out followed by a lovely nap.

Publix was sold out of the Friar Cluck Chicken Parmesean Pizza, so I will be on the lookout for that one, but nonetheless, these Screamin’ Sicilian folks know what they’re doing; I was very impressed with their pizza. I am a New Yorker so that says a lot! Anyway, definitely check them out; they strongly support the craft beer movement. I totally appreciated them reaching out to me. Show them some love!

Okay y’all, I gotta start cruisin’ for a brewsin’ once again. I mean, hell, it’s Craft Beer Week!
Cheers!

Your homey,

Ale
