The History of National Beer Day Y’all!

A lil' share with my Brew Tang Clan at my spot...
Here is a quick breakdown on how it got started.

Today’s A Good Day!

Any day named National Beer Day has to be special off the bat; the reason April 7th was declared such an honor was due it being the first legal time to pour a beer post the infamous 13-year Prohibition in 1933 thanks to the Cullen-Harrison Act signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The evening prior to this was creatively termed New Beer’s Eve with folks waiting in line for midnight to strike as if Russian River’s Pliny The Younger was being poured. Reportedly a million kegs were popped the next day.
I concur! Shooter unknown.
The 21st Amendment made everything official and graciously got rid of that haytin’ ban on selling suds and spirits on December 5th, 1933. (Hence, one of the best breweries in the nation is named after that Amendment based in San Fran, ya dig? Check it.) Of course, there were still some hurdles to eventually jump, including increasing the alcohol limit from an extra sessionable beer maxing out at 3.2 percent by weight (4 percent by volume), but that was how they got down back then.
Oh! And to show some respect to the godfather of National Beer Day, I read that a beer-loving cat named Justin Smith out of Richmond, Virginia helped make this day an official holiday for us imbibers in 2009 using Facebook for the launchpad. (This is his breakdown on how it got started here.) Hey Justin, if I ever see you in person, expect a fist bump and beer on me!
Anyway, look for my Tweets and Instagrams celebrating this sippin’ holiday. I'm off to plan Part 2 of my Brews. Brims. Beats. II event and then it's chill time.
Happy sippin’ Mr. Smith, all of you reading this, and craft beer supporters around the world! I hope you celebrate this day in style with some gangster brews. You know I will!

Cheers!

It's National Beer Day! Here's why...

It's A Celebration!

Hey man, things have been crazy over the last week or so, but hey, I can't complain because it is, after all, National Beer Day!!!

The "D" stands for Dap!
Now some ask what the hell that is, but come on, do you need a reason??? While National Beer Day is every day for me, the U.S. has made it an official one on April 7, thanks to something called the Cullen-Harrison Act and the signature of the President of the United States in 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt. See, to put an end to that damned-to-all-hell Volstead Act (coupled with the 18th Amendment) that prohibited the sale of alcohol starting on January 17,1920, Senator Pat Harrison and Thomas Cullen fought the power, scripted the aptly titled Cullen-Harrison Act to make alcohol consumption legal again, got the Congress to give it a thumbs-up on March 21, 1933, and only needed President Roosevelt's autograph to seal the deal. Well, the next day, the Prez's middle initial immediately stood for "Dap" (the knocking of fists and handshakes) because he got a lot of it when he signed off on the bill. Okay, so the beer's potency level was set at only 3.2% (by weight) which makes it about 4.0% by volume (yuck!) at the time, but things have obviously gotten a lot more potent since then (except for the drafts in Utah!). Anyway, from April 7th of 1933, the day when the law went into effect, this date in the States became the shiznit!
The Fight The Power Baby!
So celebrate today, hit up a pub with an awesome selection, give some dap to anyone who has love for the suds, and enjoy one of the most significant law changes in history. I know I am! Atlanta is absolutely gorgeous right now so I have to take advantage of it. Brewhouse Cafe, I'm on my way!
Holla,

We kicked it for National Beer Day on NBC’s Atlanta & Co.!

It was off the chain with Atlanta & Co. host
Cara Kneer, Jade Hall, and Nyssa Green!
This morning, it was Sublime Donuts, Hampton + Hudson, Atlanta & Co., your homey Ale, and a gang of beer!

Hey Y’all!
Even with the numerous plane cancellations and plane delays leaving Memphis last night, I still made it imperative to not miss this morning’s segment with the always fun talk show on NBC affiliate 11Alive which ushers in Atlanta’s weekdays with humor and news 11 am-1230 pm, Atlanta & Co.! In honor of celebrating National Beer Day (which I wrote about here), they invited me to come through and talk about this monumental day’s history, pour some beers, maybe pair it with something. Well hell, I said sure because I know a few breweries, plus I wanted to bring in a different theme regarding the vittles. Hence, I hit up the gangster donut spot called Sublime and one of my favorite hangouts, Hampton + Hudson (who I juuuuuuust featured on this blog here), and made it a dessert fest! Hampton has an awesome "Woopie Pie" made with house beer marshmallows, and Sublime is simply flawless with those doughy Os, so there you go!
Mouths were drooling, I had a blast pouring beer for host Cara Kneer, and overall loved every minute! The breweries I featured included Creature Comforts, Burial, Wicked Weed, Bells, 21st Amendment, Great Divide, Lindemans, and Catawba. So that I won’t spoil it, here is the segment. Shout out to producer Jade Hall for making it happen, regular personality Tom Sullivan, Nyssa Green, and the entire staff!

Happy National Beer Day homies!

38 million American households projected to buy beer this summer!

The Beer Institute drops some numbers on us!

Hey Fellow Craft Brew Sippers!

So we all know it was total bummer for U.S. fans with that loss during the World Cup. 'Nuf respect to the second best beer country in the world, Belgium. Anyway, I am sure Americans will be drinking away their blues with brews, so I came across some interesting news out of Washington, DC from the Beer Institute regarding the economic impact of beer sales particularly during the summer months and 4th of July weekend. I know I contributed to a lot of it. Ha!
Read their press release below. They project more than 38 million American households will purchase beer this summer. Whoa! Hopefully a good chunk of them are stocking their fridges with real beer.
Happy sippin’!

Celebrate the Beer Economy this July Fourth
Beer Institute Recognizes Economic Contribution of Beer

If you plan on reaching for a cold beer this Independence Day holiday, you will be in good company. More than 38 million American households will purchase beer this summer – making beer the preferred choice over all other types of alcohol beverages.

“Whether it’s a July Fourth celebration, or a baseball game with friends, we hope Americans drink beer responsibly this summer, and raise a toast to the millions of Americans at work because of brewers and beer importers,” said Jim McGreevy, Beer Institute president and chief executive officer.

In the 15 weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day in 2013, beer and malt beverage sales topped $11 billion, making it one of the largest selling categories of all food and beverage channels according to Andrea Riberi, senior vice president at Nielsen.

That beer does more than just quench your thirst. According to an economic study jointly commissioned by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association in 2012, U.S. brewers and beer importers support an industry that puts more than 2 million Americans to work. Beer also contributed $246.6 billion to America’s economy and generated $49 billion in local, state and federal taxes. In fact, more than 40 percent of what consumers pay for a beer goes to taxes, making taxes the most expensive ingredient in beer today.

The Beer Institute is the national trade association for the American brewing industry, representing both large and small brewers, as well as importers and industry suppliers. First founded in 1863 as the U.S. Brewers Association, the Beer Institute is committed today to the development of sound public policy and to the values of civic duty and personal responsibility:www.BeerInstitute.org. Sierra Nevada and Omnipollo launch a brew for National Hazy IPA Day!

Whaddup?!!!

For all you hop heads out there like yours truly, you need to put National Hazy IPA Day on your calendar, which is coming up this Thursday, August 15th! And with all the festivities and special releases that will be happening around the US celebrating arguably the most popular beer style, I will keep an eye out for you. In fact, one of my favorite brew companies in the world, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., just collaborated with Sweden’s brewing king, Omnipollo, to create a limited-edition hazy IPA. They're both gangster, so I bet this is straight fire!

And like many special collabs, this one is going to be rare as hell and hard to get, so scoop this one called Hazy IPA Day (8.2%) on Sierra’s online store coming in 4-pack of 16-ounce cans, and directly at their Chico, CA, and Mills River, NC. locations. They told me they will also have it at select accounts in Manhattan and Brooklyn on draft while supplies last. I just had a blast at the North Carolina brewing headquarters and had a blast, but evidently I missed this launch. Regardless, I am letting you know about it so when you scoop some, feel free to rub it in; I won’t be mad. (Okay, maybe a little bit, but it’s all good.) The official press release is below. Let me know how it is!

Enjoy!

Sierra Nevada to Release Rare Ultra Hazy Beer for National Hazy IPA Day, Aug 15

‘Hazy Day IPA’ Collaboration with Omnipollo

To celebrate the second annual National Hazy IPA Day (August 15), Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is releasing Hazy Day IPA, an ultra-Hazy Double IPA in collaboration with internationally acclaimed brewery Omnipollo of Sweden. The small-batch beer will only be available at the Sierra Nevada’s California and North Carolina breweries, through their online gift shop, and at select bars in the New York City area.

Hazy Day IPA is silky smooth and generously dry-hopped at an impressive seven pounds per barrel with Citra and Riwaka. It boasts notes of pineapple and orange candy, with top notes of citrus and a soft and juicy finish. At 8.2% ABV and just 30 IBU, it’s a premium expression of the Hazy IPA style, the brainchild of brewers from both Sierra Nevada and Omnipollo.

“We go all in for Hazy IPA Day,” said Isaiah Mangold, Head Innovation Brewer at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. “We wanted a premium example of the style. So we designed this ultra-Hazy DIPA with our friends at Omnipollo for maximum hazy, hoppy flavor. Even the art on the cans was a collaborative effort. You can see and taste the influence from both breweries through this beer experience, making it a truly special and rare opportunity.”

Craft beer fans can que up on release day to snag a Hazy Day IPA 4-pack of 16-ounce cans online at SierraNevada.com, or at one of the Sierra Nevada brewery locations (Chico, California or Mills River, North Carolina) where draft pours, menu specials and other festivities to mark the special occasion will be offered. In addition, a limited number of craft beer destination bars in New York City will tap kegs of the specialty release to mark the occasion.

Beer fans unable to catch this 2024 limited-edition release to commemorate Hazy IPA Day on August 15 are encouraged to celebrate the occasion anyway by gathering with friends and toasting to one of the most popular styles in modern craft beer.

Check me out on NBC’s Atlanta & Company!

This time, we're celebrating
National Beer Lover’s Day!
Click on the TV screen or here to see this fun episode!
Hey Y’all!
It’s my second time on the fun show Atlanta & Company and this time we’re talking about celebrating September 7th as the official date for National Beer Lover’s Day here.
The first go around was hella fun on National Beer Day with my homey Cara Kneer on this episode; this time, it’s with the show’s host Christine Pullara where I featured a lot of beer and glassware from my private stash. The subject was finding beers women were like. I, of course, said that a lot of women I know love brew already, but recommended some popular ones I have won over non-believers with from past tastings.
Check it out and let me know what you think. There is a lot more to come!
Best!

ALE MAX Returns to Fuse Craft Beer & Sneaker Cultures!

Yup!

It's that time again! Ale Max Day, the event put on by my boy Craig and I, will be in its second year, and it's going to be an even crazier one set for Monday Night Brewing's Garage on March 22, and then the next day in Nashville, TN, at Bearded Iris's Sylvan Supply location on March 23rd! Here is all the info below. Stay tuned for more updates on my Instagram and @ALEMAX.OFFICIAL. Here is the official press release below. Let's get it!

This is the dope Ale Max can we are doing for Monday Night Brewing!

ALE MAX Returns to Fuse Craft Beer & Sneaker Cultures

Second annual ALE MAX joins forces with Nashville hometown favorite,
Bearded Iris Brewing Co. to launch limited-edition, sneaker-inspired IPA

Last March, Atlanta-based marketing veteran Craig Stroud and craft beer aficionado Ale Sharpton joined forces to launch the perfect mashup experience with ALE MAX – a series of events timed around Nike Air Max Day (March 26) aimed to deliver a beautifully brewed fusion of craft beer, sneaker culture, and community engagement. This year, ALE MAX is collaborating with Southeastern craft beer heavyweights Bearded Iris Brewing (Nashville, Tenn.) and Monday Night Brewing (Atlanta, Ga.) to launch a limited-edition brew, ALE MAX 1, alongside events and activations that will excite sneaker and beer lovers alike.

“Craft beer and sneaker cultures have a long history of subtly crossing paths, but typically not in a very intentional way,” said Stroud about the inception of ALE MAX. “While there have been many individual beer and sneaker launches and experiences, we haven’t come across any that simultaneously tap into the pulse of both. Creating ALE MAX seemed like the perfect way to bring these two passionate, opinionated, and niche communities together.”

ALE MAX Day: A Celebration of Air and Ale (FREE to the public):
Beer lovers and sneakerheads are invited to sport their Air Max and cheers to ALE MAX

Monday Night Garage on Friday, March 22 (7 to 11 pm)
Address: 933 Lee St SW, Atlanta, GA 30310

This is the dope Ale Max can we are doing for Bearded Iris Brewing!

Bearded Iris, Sylvan Supply on Saturday, March 23 (4 to 8 pm)
Address: 101 Charlotte Ave Suite 40, Nashville, TN 37209

Bearded Iris Brewing will be presenting flavor-forward interpretations of arguably the most popular beer style in America, the hazy IPA. This limited-edition beer will be inspired by the iconic AIR MAX 1, a sneaker that has left an indelible mark on the shoe world through innovation, style, and fandom since its debut in 1987. This collaboration aims to unite beer advocates with local sneaker enthusiasts, offering an unparalleled sensory experience that fosters community and culture. Attendees can anticipate sneaker showcases, discussions, and the chance to connect with like-minded enthusiasts while sampling ALE MAX 1, a Max IPA at 7.891% will be released in limited cans and draft.

“We came together to design an IPA that pairs old school traditions with new ideas to celebrate Ale Max Day,” said Head Brewer Brandon Tarr. “We are excited to be part of this collaboration that lifts up both sneaker and hop heads alike. The resulting beer is a testament to what a great collaboration can be, different from what anyone would have done on their own, and the result is so much better for it."

Oakland, California-based hip-hop quartet Souls Of Mischief changed the game when they dropped their debut album ’93 ‘Til Infinity, and now 30 years later, they are on a globetrotting tour. Atlanta’s intimate concert venue City Winery will be hosting them on July 1st to perform the entire classic album live for one night. If Dad is truly a hip-hop head, he will cry tears of joy when you hand him a ticket to this show. Trust me.

They Say:

1993, West Coast... Dr Dre vs Eazy-E, Snoop Doggy Dog on the rise with his debut album alongside the N.W.A don of production. Tupac with the summer release of ‘I Get Around’, but caught up in alleged gun fights and assault charges. G-funk the national conversation. So when Souls Of Mischief came onto the scene with their funky outfits, slammin’ beats and breazy attitudes - backed with a lyrical dexterity far beyond their teenage years – a fresh hop to the bounce of the West Coast was born.

The California quartet announced themselves with harmlessly refreshing confidence, on more of a Tribe tip with jazz-drips and groove-infused rhythms – yet lyrically more adventurous and weed-scented; more of a Pharcyde vibe with endlessly cool rhymes and multisyllabic wordplays - yet more intellectual, energetic and freestyle-ready. A funky introspection was clear to see. This was Oakland, California in 1993.

...Now, 30 years on, 93 to 23, still infinity. Still hectic out there. Time flies but Souls are still chillin. “Now you have younger generations who were born in ’93,” says Phesto. “They’re like, ‘ ’93 ’til infinity.’ It means so many different things to so many different people
