Halloween Saturday is going to be nuts in The ATL!

'I'm A Beast' and 'Boos and Brews' are going to rock Atlanta on Saturday night

Hey Brew Heads,
I know I have an event at the same exact time on Saturday called I'm A Beast (below) that I would love for you to attend, but SweetWater Brewery and Full Pint Productions' Boos and Brews is also going to be a bash so maybe you can juggle both, along with all of the rest of the crazy things going on around the city?

Give it a try because you owe it to yourself to kick it and kick it hard! I know I am!

What's the "hops" for Thursday? Alon's! Check this out:

Alon's had me at "stein"!
Alon's Bakery is the move for Thursday!

Besides the NBA season starting, I was wondering what to do on Thursday and voilà! This Alon's Bakery and Market event has Ale written all over it. I went to Alon's once and was blown away by how simply awesome this spot was across from the Perimeter Mall. It brought me back to the gourmet one-stop European-style shops in New York where people eat on premises, go grocery shopping or just chill out after a hard day's work. Everything is made on site including mouthwatering desserts, bread baked by the hour, artisan cheeses, numerous entrées and even a bar with taps! Hopefully I will see you there. It should be nuts!

Homies help Ale stick it to the man!

Keven Digital puts Ale dead center. Dopeness!

It's been hella cool seeing my Ale Sharpton stickers around the A and I have to thank two Kevins -- well, one of them is spelled Keven -- a shout out in particular.
I went to Taste of Atlanta (thanks 360 Media!) last weekend (check out my latest write-up) and my dude Kevin Redmon, who helps produce some of the hottest events in Atlanta and owns online jewelry boutique Limón Verde, was unloading supplies from his truck. I happened to be walking down a side street street with my girl Andrea and ran into him. He said, "Yo, Ale, look!" and pointed to my sticker on his truck's back window. What are the chances??? He said his friend who's a cop put it there and he loved it. That was pretty cool. I gave Kevin another one so that he could return the favor, so if you an APD car with Ale on it, there you go.
Mr. Redmon's pimpmobile.
And then last night, I met up with my homey and one of the best videographers this side of the Mississippi, L.A. native Keven Digital for KRJ Productions, last night at Taco Mac Metropolis to see the Lakers whip the Rockets' derrieres. He just sent me the photo above of his prized Mac laptop. It's an honor, especially with that being his "baby" and the way he made my joint look like it was a die-cut edition. Stay tuned because Kev and I are working on a gangster collaboration that will undoubtedly change the game. If you want some hot video footage, look no further than Mr. Digital (peep his steez here).
Thanks for the love, fellow sippers! Look for more sightings of Ale stickin' it to the man at a hot spot near you.
Damn, I need more stickers.

Taste of Atlanta, a new article and a case of the Mondays!

Happy Monday (I guess)!

Lines were down the block for
Gladys' Chicken and Waffles
Please tell me you had the chance to go by Taste of Atlanta during this past weekend??? Thousands of Atlantans flocked this street extravaganza in Midtown to get their grub and drink on. The food was awesome due to more than 70 restaurants flaunting their eclectic menu of specialties, plus there was an enlightening Chocolate Academy I attended hosted by radio personality Tom Sullivan and Taria Camerino from the Highland Bakery who schooled us on the Fair Trade chocolates and what constitutes real chocolate.

This was my favorite chocolate.
Oh, and drinks, right? The wine got a lot of love, but the beer selection was sick in the VIP tent (thanks to my man Reid Ramsey and Hop City) including two flowing taps of the new Wild Heaven brews, more than a 100 different bottles to choose from, and a Cruisin' For A Brewsin' interview with the Chairman of Innis and Gunn, Tony Hunt, who was pouring his spectacular Rum Cask Finish Oak Aged Beer. Thanking the heavens, the weather was absolutely perfect which made it one of the most beautiful weekends in the A! You better make it imperative to go next year!
Innis and Gunn's Tony Hunt, Ale and Reid

Look for the full video of Tony, Reid and your homey Ale talking about Innis soon.

My latest beer article

Hey Fam!
I have been pretty hot regarding writing articles on the Web and in print this week. Here is the latest and greatest to help support the brewing revolution!
I did this joint for The Atlanta Voice, one of the oldest existing African-American publications in the nation that happens to be pretty much in my backyard. I want to send a shout out to the editor Greg Huskisson and Publisher Janis Ware for having the open mind to spread the word  about how beer is making major noise in Georgia's capital city, plus kudos to my fine homey and food writer Andrea Janise for being a sport and two-fistin' some SweetWater goodies. Here's the link and the physical paper that is all over ATL.
Ales, Lagers and Suds, Oh My!

Look out for my coverage on some awesome new places to visit that combines brew, grub and overall good times next week.
Cheers!

Cruisin' For a Brewsin: Monday Night kicks ass in the ATL!

Yesterday was a Monday that will surely be stored in the ol' memory bank. After spending hours in front of the computer to finish a beer piece for The Atlanta Voice (grab a copy on Thursday), I, like every avid football nut, always look forward to the Monday Night Football game. Little did I know that an entirely different event with the same "Monday Night" theme would get more Ale love than ESPN. But before we go there, a bro had to eat.

I was going to try and fit in a visit to P'Cheen's wing night in Inman Park that my main man Mike Jordan from Thrillist was hyping up, but Flip Burger's grand opening of their second ATL spot was going down at the same time in Buckhead. Since the latter was a once in a lifetime thing, MJ understood the rain check.
The "Southern Burgers" were killer!

When I arrived at Flip II, wine was given at the door. Thank goodness the brew option was available if one asked, so I chose the SweetWater 420 on tap over the Stella. Next up was the grub. Now I usually don't do too much red meat, but when I saw those burger samples cut in quarters pass by on trays, I had to make an exception. (Hell, it's a burger joint so I was gonna indulge anyway, right?) The first one was the called the "Southern": chicken fried ("grass-fed") beef, pimento cheese, b&b pickles and chow chow. I can't front, besides Holeman and Finch's burgers, this Flip special had me doing the two-step! It was delicious, coupled with some onion rings that I luckily scored by a buzzer beater. I mean, people camped out right by the servers' entrance so they would get first dibs of whatever came out, so I was in no mood to slug it out with them. Quite honestly, that Southern is all I needed. I know they have salads, kooky shakes (Krispy Kreme Doughnut Shake, anyone?) and all kinds of crazy burger combos (here's the menu), so like Schwarzenegger, I'll be back.

Dropping some goodbyes and thanking The Reynolds Group firm for the invite, I ran into a talented photographer and food blogger Broderick on the way out and he said he was meeting up with a dude named Jonathan Baker, one of the founders of the Monday Night Brewery. I had to roll; I always heard about it and hell,  it's beer, so I happily followed him. After a series of turns and side streets, its West Side location turned out to be a backyard with steaming beer vats, a hop vine, an open garage with a custom-made refrigerator specifically to run draft lines through holes drilled in its door and about 30 folks holding Monday Night glasses filled with homebrewed IPAs (the "Rye" and "Toasty") chatting it up. It seemed like Atlanta's best kept secret for beer lovers, but one of the founders welcomed me with a cold one and was excited that I was going to post my visit on this site. I'm a man of my word so here it is!
Me and Mr. Baker

From what I understand, it was weekly until they spread it out a bit due to 9-5 gigs, kids and so on. They are aiming to bottle and distribute their liquid mastery and I will surely be doing a full piece on them in the near future, but until then, check out their website and support their cause. This gathering, which originally was a Bible study group (yep, you read right), is a beautiful thing run by cool folks who know their brew so I am looking forward to sipping some more of their homemade lovelies. Much props go to Jonathan (head of marketing and "Mind Control") and Joel (the "Operations Guy"); these guys were class acts and even gave my sticker some love by posting it dead center on the "kegerator." That's what's up! (I think I crossed paths with Jeff, Monday's "Supreme Beer Chancellor," on the way out because he was loosening his suit and tie like Clark Kent on a mission when heading up the driveway, but I will holla at him on another Monday.)

Bangin' smoked wings
Getting to my car, I caught a glimpse of the abysmal Yankee score on my phone and then realized I still had time to meet Mr. Jordan and his homey Donell at P'Cheen after all. It turns out that Mondays are gangster for BBQ; Chef Mike LaSage takes over the kitchen with his special menu, which includes wings that were stacked like Lincoln Logs  (see left) complete with four different sauces themed after American cities specializing in BBQ (see the complete menu here). Yep! "Thrillist Mike" was on point. The wings were smoked out more than Snoop Dogg (we're talking smoked and marinated on site for 48 hours, people), delicious and tender. Good call!

Even though my Yanks got waxed, it was still an enlightening evening that proved Sunday doesn't have to be the last day to hang out in Atlanta.

Like the Monday Night Brewery's slogan says, "Weekends are overrated!"

They have a great case.

Your homey Ale was on CNN!

Hey Fam,

They had your homey Ale on CNN. I was at the very end of the "Lunch Crashing the Stem Cell Debate" clip. He even gave me props on my answer. Ha! http://www.cnn.com/video/#

Watch the latest breaking news, politics, entertainment...

See! I am not all about brew, just most of me. Ha! This is a new show by a comedian turned news reporter Pete Dominick who did a pretty good job disclosing some of the public's closed mindedness! I didn't know much about the whole Stem Cell thing, so I had to tell the truth, ya heard???

This is gangster: Ohio brewers unite to make a twelve pack for Brewzilla!

Ayyyo, 'nuff respect to the dozen of Ohio brewers collaborating on a twelve-pack sampler that launches in the spirit of Cleveland Beer Week's Brewzilla Festival (I am loving all these creative names) in my former stomping grounds on Saturday, October 23. It's proven again and again that it's all love in the world of craft brewing, and for these guys to join together and create six original, one-time brews almost brings beers, I mean tears to my eyes! This is especially the case with me being a Shaker Heights High School grad in all, so a brotha has to give this a shout out.
Here are the crafty concoctions below. I haven't received the actual names of them, but the styles show they are very serious!:

Barrel-aged Strong Ale -- brewed by Great Lakes Brewing Co. and Cellar Rats Brewery.
Alt Bier -- by Cornerstone Brewing Co. and Buckeye Brewing.
Rye Kolsch -- by Willoughby Brewing Co. and the Brew Kettle.
Smoked Black Lager -- by Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. and Indigo Imp Brewery.
Imperial American Porter -- by Hoppin' Frog Brewery and Rocky River Brewing Co.
Wet Hop IPA -- by Fat Head's Brewery and Black Box Brewing Co.
Hopefully other states including Georgia (a-hem!) catch on and do this as well!
Holla!

The Official Birthday Weekend Recap!

Like I said, man, it was one helluva birthday weekend for your homey, Ale!
One of my gangster gifts! This was done by Dubelyoo.

Thursday, October 7th
5 Seasons' Dennis getting it started
Although my birthday was officially on Friday, October 8th, I had to get it started on Thursday at 5 Seasons Brewery-Prado in Sandy Springs just outside the Atlanta Perimeter. My cuz Gari and I joined co-owner Dennis Lange's beer tour where I got to sip one of the best IPAs in the business, the brewed-on-site Hopgasm (7% ABV) created by the legendary Brewmaster Kevin McNerney (and co-founder of SweetWater). Afterwards, a handful of my bros in the media industry met me for a private beer tasting of O'Dempsey's full-flavored Big Red Ale (30 IBUs, 6%) and well-crafted Inukshuk IPA (7 %) hosted by the brewery's co-founder Randy Dempsey. We talked about the beer revolution developing in Georgia, paired his brewskies with some incredible blue cheese and watched the Yankees make it one game away from sweeping the Minnesota Twins (yessir!!!).
Randy O'Dempsey and the Brews Brothers
The night cap was spent a few doors down at The Fred, the ultimate man cave named after Taco Mac's Beverage Director Fred Crudder. This super hideout is the members-only speakeasy of brew enthusiasts throughout the city decked out with plush leather chairs, flat screens, hard-to-finds on tap and the overall ambiance of beer love. Let's just say I left feeling nice and happy, ready for midnight to strike.

Friday, October 8th
The morning promised a freakin' gorgeous day so I woke up like Coming To America's Prince Akeem (minus the bathers and wipers) and got all of the responsible stuff out the way before noon. I had to finish an article for Jet Magazine before kickin' it, so I knocked it out and then had lunch with a good friend at Maggiano's. The brew list was limited, so I settled on Stella Artois since the Peroni tap was out. The food was decent and it was a great time overall.
From there, I picked up the remaining Ale Sharpton stickers (that were UV coated this time), worked out, got my daily dose of PTI and then prepared for the Atlanta Thrashers' home opener.
Kickin' it with my main man Thrash
The vibe was filled with excitement in the CNN Center as fans wolfed down chow, chugged brews and chorused a wave of boos for anyone who wore the opposing Washington Capitals jersey (mostly Ovechkin's #8--arguably the best player in the league). I killed...I mean sipped a 32-ounce Sierra Nevada Pale Ale from my peoples at Great Wraps paired (ha!) with Chick-Fil-A nuggets and then it was on!
The game itself was incredible, scary and one of the most memorable, including the Thrashers goalie passing out for a good ten minutes and brotherman Evander Kane scoring two goals (who happened to be #8; I think he can be a NHL all-star this year, seriously!). Although there were no fights, it was well worth it! Oh yeah, and how could I forget? Phillips Arena has some decent brews to choose from, but with one of the best IPAs brewed in the States, SweetWater got the nod.
To end off the night, I hit up my favorite Atlanta night spot of Fridays, MJQs, with my boy Stone from who runs the music site Couchsessions.com back in Washington D.C. Showing off the best Hip-Hop club night in ATL was perfect because it was A3C Weekend, so special guests like 9th Wonder, Evil D (from Black Moon), DJ Drama (Gangsta Grizzillz!) were in the building and one of my A-list DJs, Rasta Root, got busy on the wheels. I revisited my sweetheart, Stella, for four bucks and bobbed my head to some banging beats and lyrics. Afterwards, a television show from Cincinnati interviewed me outside (I don't quite remember the whole conversation, honestly), I stopped by DRES the BEATnik's afterparty which tripped me out--dude had a huge homemade movie screen in his backyard and music blasting at 2:30 in the morning!!! Although he offered me a brew from his keg of PBR and I wasn't driving, I couldn't do it and respectfully declined. I just wanted a pint of sleep by that point, but I had an awesome b-day!

Saturday, October 9th
Pacci's Exec Chef Keira Moitz rocked!
Lunch at Midtown's Pacci, a beautifully designed Italian-themed restaurant with the talents and sweet personality of Executive Chef Keira Moritz to match started my day. She hand-delivered foodie Andrea Janise and I everything from the freshest calamari, to a delicious Eggs Abercrombie with a crab cake,  the best duck confit I ever had, some killer gnocchi and a chocolate cake complete with a birthday candle.
The brew? A New Zealand pilsner called MOA which wasn't half bad, crisp, 5.5% with a hoppy finish. A new one for Ale! Hooray! Andrea played the ultimate wing...woman and tasted all of the specials for the restaurant's promotion, "Cocktails For A Cure" dedicated to combating HIV/AIDS that runs thru December 1st, World AIDS Day. Definitely check out this spot along with the chilled out Alto-Rex on the rooftop during days with clement weather.
Art, Beats + Lyrics founders Dubelyoo and
Jabari came through
Afterwards, we had to get brew and supplies for a "few" friends and family getting together later on, so I picked out a mixed twelve of Flying Dog for a reasonable $12.99 at Mac's Beer and Wine down the street from Pacci, and then sealed the deal at Green's on Ponce for the remaining mixed twelve of Dundee's (a very reasonable $9.99); a Blue Moon mixed twelve for the ladies and wheat lovers ($12.99); and a bomber of Lagunitas' Little Sumpin' Wild Ale ($3.99) which was fantastic! Happy I stayed within my budget, there was nothing left to do catch a ten-minute nap before the shindig.
The food was incredible thanks to my sister, Chef Monie Love, and my mom's world famous baked beans (I can't explain them, but it's a recipe more sacred than the Colonel's!). And the gifts? Everyone had beer specialists working overtime at package stores all over Atlanta to find a great beer for me to try. The result was me cheesin' every time a posse member rolled in with corked bottles of gangster brews including Affligem Dubbel, Piraat, "Chatoe" Rogue OREgasmic Ale (love that name!), Allagash Curieux and Malheur 10. There was also a bomber the Rogue John Hohn Ale, a mixed-four pack of Unibroue product, a quartet of Guinness glasses designed with the brewery's vintage ads, a classy crystal mug boasting "Ale Sharpton"etched in the middle and a brilliant portrait of yours truly done by the world famous artist, Dubelyoo (www.dubelyoo.net) that also blew me away.
The rest of the night, if I remember correctly, included spades (I challenge anyone!), music, jokes and no sleep!

Sunday, October 10th
Yom Sippour is officially declared!
After sleeping in, it was game time! Surrounded by HD televisions showing every game at The Grove, the fam, my cousin Grieg (who celebrated his uncanny 10/10/10 birthday date), my boy "G-Unit" and rabid football fans kicked it. The beer selection was pretty decent, so I was treated to an Old Rasputin Imperial Stout and a 90 Minute Dogfish Head IPA. After the Colts won, it was time for the 4 o'clock NFL shift.
And then I got the call.
It turned out that my boy Reid Ramsey, another Atlanta beer aficionado (follow him on Twitter @ATLBeerMaster), was having a few people over for the Braves game and was quenching thirsts with four kegs of local brew (whoa!) and bottles upon bottles of some of the most exotic brews even I have never heard of! Man, I thought my bottle collection was sick; I think he had me beat by a few hundred. His fridge was packed with cold ones from the four corners of the earth which we tasted including a mysterious swing-topped bottle given to him by the aforementioned Dennis from 5 Seasons (six degrees of separation!) and then he popped the absolutely mind-blowing Old Rasputin XI Anniversary in celebration of my birthday. (We both signed the bottle and made it an instant keepsake). Yo, we had so much fun talking about sports, ales and lagers with other brew heads that I had to officially declare October 10th Yom Sippour answered by a unanimous round of cheers!
Thanking Reid for the gracious hospitality, my crew headed to my mom's for her classic spaghetti and meatballs, the third episode of Dexter (which is still "eh" by this point but warming up), and then it was home to finish the Sunday Night football game followed by the 1:00 AM replay of Mad Men on AMC.
The prayer thanking the Creator for the safe evening and years of being blessed concluded the weekend that was straight bananas! It was all worthwhile writing all of this and sharing it with you, another friend who is also responsible for making this one unforgettable year.
A toast to you!
Your bro,
Ale

This weekend has been nuts so far!

Hey Brew Crew!
Toasting to y'all while sippin' a Great Divide Rumble IPA in an awesome brewery's glass from Toronto, Steam Whistle! Cheers to Stone (www.couchsessions.com) who took the flick!
My birthday has been off the chain like broke bike pedals! The thing is, what really made it shine were the amount of visits to this site. It's overwhelming which shows that there's love for Ale and, ultimately, a beer revolution going on that we're all a part of. Der Biergarten's video was a hit so big ups to them too!
Once I recoup, look for the weekend recap on Monday. My bday started really on Thursday at 5 Seasons Prado (thanks Dennis, Randy and your O'Dempsey's brews!!!), but as midnight hit, things were official!
I appreciate the hits, fam. You will always be welcome in Ale's house, so leave comments or things happening and I've got you covered. Cool?
Let's continue spreading the word about the world's greatest beverage, beer!
Salud!

As we all know, I try to show love to any business centered around brew, but the cool people over at Der Biergarten took it to the next level and asked me to make this site the exclusive debut launch for the captivating video below! Not only was I honored, but I asked music producer extraordinaire and Earkraft co-founder Rashad Suede to hook us up with the perfect track called “Peace To Brother Elvin” to complement this trippy time-warped art exhibition. Mr. Suede did it because he, too, loves the brews and scoring films, so it was a no-brainer. Bottom line, the track fit so perfect it was eerie and the rest is history!
